What does it actually mean to live the good life? We might picture wealth, ease, or picture-perfect relationships, but Psalm 1 challenges every assumption we bring to that question. This ancient song cuts straight to the heart of how we think, what we absorb, and what we allow to quietly shape our desires and decisions. The Psalm opens with a striking word: blessed, meaning a life that is genuinely worth living. But before it tells us what that life looks like, it traces a sobering progression, from walking in the wrong counsel, to standing in a wrong way of life, to sitting in a posture of cynicism and mockery. What makes this progression so convicting is how gradual and unconscious it can be. We rarely choose to drift. We simply absorb, and over time, what we absorb becomes what we believe, and what we believe becomes how we live. The spiritual invitation here is to pause and ask ourselves honestly: where is our counsel actually coming from? What voices, habits, and cultural currents are quietly forming the way we see the world? These are not comfortable questions, but they are essential ones for anyone serious about walking faithfully.
